ISO 45001

ISO 45001 preparation and certification

Get your occupational health and safety management system ready for certification, with guidance from a qualified ISO 45001 lead auditor who knows what certification auditors look for.

Certification that reflects how you really work

ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. Certification shows clients, head contractors and tender panels that you manage WHS risk in a structured, auditable way. For many organisations it’s also a prequalification requirement for tenders and supplier panels.

The risk is ending up with a stack of documents written to pass an audit that nobody uses. We take the opposite approach. We build the system around your existing processes, fill the gaps the standard requires and make sure your people understand their part in it.

Karim is a qualified lead auditor for ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001, so we can also integrate safety with your quality and environmental systems if you need all three.

What you get

  • A gap analysis against every clause of ISO 45001
  • A clear, prioritised implementation plan
  • Documentation that fits your business
  • Internal audit and management review before certification

What’s included

Our ISO 45001 services

Gap analysis

We assess your current system against the requirements of ISO 45001 and give you a clear report of what’s in place, what’s partly there and what’s missing.

Implementation planning

A realistic plan with priorities, owners and timeframes, sized to your resources and your target certification date.

System documentation

OH&S policy, objectives, risk and opportunity registers, legal register, procedures and records that match how your business operates.

Worker participation

ISO 45001 puts real weight on consultation and participation. We help you set up processes that meet the standard and your consultation duties under WHS laws.

Internal audits

Independent internal audits and a management review, so you go into certification with evidence that the system works.

Certification audit support

Help choosing an accredited certification body, preparing for Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits and closing out any nonconformities.

Hand ticking off items on an audit checklist

Moving from AS/NZS 4801 or OHSAS 18001?

Both older standards have been superseded by ISO 45001. If your system was built to either one, much of it can be kept. The main changes are a stronger focus on:

  • Leadership and top management accountability
  • Consultation and participation of workers
  • The context of your organisation and the needs of interested parties
  • Risks and opportunities to the management system, not just hazards

ISO 45001 was amended in 2024 to require organisations to consider whether climate change is a relevant issue for their system, and a revised edition of the standard is in development. We keep across these changes so your system stays current.

How long does ISO 45001 certification take?

It depends on how mature your current system is and the size of your business. A business with a working WHS system may be ready within a few months. One starting from scratch will take longer, because the system needs time to operate and generate records before the certification audit. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe after the gap analysis.

Can you certify us?

No, and no consultant should. Certification must be carried out by an independent certification body, ideally one accredited by JAS-ANZ. Keeping consulting and certification separate protects the credibility of your certificate. We prepare you and support you through the audits.

Is ISO 45001 a legal requirement in Australia?

No. Your legal obligations come from the WHS Act and Regulations. ISO 45001 is voluntary, but a well-implemented system is one of the best ways to show you are meeting those duties, and many clients and tenders ask for it.

Can ISO 45001 be integrated with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001?

Yes. All three standards share the same high-level structure, so policy, document control, internal audit and management review can be combined. Karim is a qualified lead auditor for all three.
